I obviously think not; this one View all 12 comments. I had to actively force myself to resist peeking at pages further on to see who survived. I was not at all happy with the direction the Ewan storyline ended up going in. Unfortunately prose is not erudite and brilliant just because it contains a set amount of words people need to look up to grasp.
I can’t help but wonder what goes on in the minds of these authors! The graphic violence and detestable nature of the antagonist paired with an eclectic cast of characters made this book a fantastic read. Gruesome haydrr the like of which are never seen in real life — check check check! Refresh and try again. She’s done it twice, now. He is struggling with another problem, though — his brother disappeared when they were children, and he has been haunted ever since.

Books just like this are a dime a dozen. For christs sake, read the synopsis Jun 14, Lisa rated it it was amazing Shelves: Good old fashioned detective work would be nice, occasionally. It is perfectly paced, and the characters hayxer as strongly represented as they were in Birdman.
Jack Caffery needs a smack upside the head, a course of therapy and a different job. The crime itself is also approached from an odd angle as we are given the perspectives of both the detectives attempting to solve the case and the murder birdmzn well as, briefly, the victims. While I can stomach quite a few things, this one about took me over the edge. This book left me with anything but that feeling. Paperbackpages. I’ll definitely move ahead in this series! But Jack doesn’t have the courage to dump her, since he thinks Veronica has had a recurrence of a previous haydwr of cancer. Detective Inspector Jack Caffery – young, driven, unshockable – finds himself facing both hostility within the force and echoes of his past in this, his first case with AMIP.
I have ambivalent feelings about Birdman; I liked it, but I definitely did not love it.
View all 15 comments. If this had been a film I would have been watching through splayed fingers from behind a cushion! I love horror; I love suspense And Briticisms don’t necessarily create a feeling of place on their own, if the soul and sense of said place is missing or mangled.
I couldn’t put it the book down. The stories pretty much stand on their own. Detective Inspector Jack Caffery – young, driven, unshockable – is called to one of the most gruesome crime scenes he has ever seen. Quite difficult to keep reading at times due to the particularly disturbing nature of the crimes perpetrated against children; I had to keep reminding myself ‘this isn’t real’, but the plot twists and turns, and the tension was almost unbearable at some points I couldn’t stop reading.

I’m looking forward to finding out what else Jack Caffery gets into in the next installment!
The Treatment (Jack Caffery, #2) by Mo Hayder
Caffery is a brilliant young detective with nerves of steel and great instincts. Another major issue with the novel was the manner in which Jack Caffery made breakthroughs in the case. We have some people in this novel who are interested in necrophilia.
Despite her use of many tropes of the genre, I was impressed with the vivid characters and thrilling propulsion of the plotting. Birdman is set in the dawn of the new millennium and follows the London Metropolitan Police’s Murder team as they attempt to track down a possible contemporary Jack the Ripper serial killer.
