Soueif’s novel is written in English, yet much of the time it is conveying speech and thought that takes place in ahdf languages. There was a problem filtering reviews right now. Soueif did a remarkable amount of research for this novel, including 19th-century travel journals of both men and women and newspaper archives in Egyptian and British libraries I sympathize with the reader who found the use of transliterated Arabic words difficult, olve I myself found this technique delightful.
But her interest in Egypt has more to do with her crush on Omar al-Ghamrawi, a passionate and difficult older Egyptian-American conductor and political writer, than with her work.
